A few words about Facebook ...

Okay ... first, I starting playing golf (and liking it) and now I am messing around with Facebook ... a friend who knows me well asked today if he needed to stage an intervention!  It's not that I am against having a good time on the golf course or anti-technology ... it is that I am pro-effectiveness.  My question has been, what do these pursuits really accomplish ... when I have so many things in my life that I have yet to master and when I see others spending/wasting so much time on them ...

I will write about golf another day but I have observations and questions about Facebook ...

  • Reconnecting with old friends. I have talked with my cousin from Canada who was a close childhood friend and seen pics of her family, reconnected with students who used to be in my youth group years ago, college friends, etc. Problem is - what about those "friends" you have gladly left in your past?  Is ignoring a friend request offensive?
  • Knowing what you are doing! ... what is written on a person's "wall" is up for all to see so save those personal messages for another format ... urp.  How do you have a private talk with one person that everyone else isn't pivy to?
  • New friends. Rachel has been on Facebook for a while ... I could not figure out how she knew so many people at church I barely knew ... until I discovered the Facebook link.  As a matter of fact, Jim Walker set up a "FaithBridge" group for people who are involved inour church to have a format to talk, share pics, etc.  If you are already a Facebook junkie then I am sure you know how to link up to that group ... if not, somebody more savvy than me will have to help out with some instructions ...
  • Advertise - I like the ad banners.  Wonder what it would cost to run a FaithBridge promo for people getting on Facebook in Jax?
  • Time - how do you keep your Facebook from becoming like the "Crackberrys" some carry around and can't turn off.  BTW - play with that Crackberry while we are at lunch together and don't be surprised if I "accidentally" spill my tea in your lap ...

Okay tech geeks, help me out with answers to some of my questions.

I am not really a tech geek, but I certainly like the idea of advertising FaithBridge on Facebook. Not sure how to go about it though.

Old Friends - I have both ignored and been ignored. It stings for a VERY brief moment, then you realize you have about 4 million other things to worry about and you move on. I wouldn't lose sleep over it . . . but then I'm pretty insensitive.

What you're doing - mouse over "Settings" at the very top of the page, select "Privacy". You can tweak who sees what. Also, if you use the "notes" application at the bottom of your page, you can send a note to a specific person and there is an option on the drafting page to select who can see it, so you can limit view to the person you're sending to if you want. The fact that you sent a note may be visible, based on your privacy settings, but the content will not.

As for the rest, still learning myself.

My feelings toward Facebook usage are very similar to yours. Not sure I want to open that can of worms and have something else to keep up with. Have you received any advice regarding Facebook etiquette?

Also, wondering what parents are doing to protect their kids who are on Facebook.

PS. see me about the golf thing.
