A Tribute to John

On Friday, November 21 at 1:00 pm we will hold a worship service to honor and say good bye to John Bond.  John and Lila are not just members of this church family, they are foundational to it.  Six weeks ago, there was no apparent problem and John was recovering from shoulder surgery and looking forward to getting back on the golf course.

The way John’s cancer progressed allowed him to have a significant quality of life until his very last days. Then, when he was aware of what was happening he had time to make the needed arrangements, to know what was happening and call in loved ones to say good bye.  One family member told me that God used John’s illness and impending death as a way to have an impromptu “family reunion.”  One great part of this was that this reunion included both biological and spiritual family.  Together, there was a large crowd who assembled throughout the mornings, afternoons and evenings of each day ... just because of their love for John and Lila.

John was a unique man – he was funny, strong willed, loved the Lord, kind, “particular” … and a host of other adjectives!  One of the unique things about John and Lila is their “unofficial” ministry to so many of the young couples in our church family.  They were surrogate parents and grandparents to a host of these young couples whose biological families often lived in another part of the country.

I am writing this both to honor John and because I need your help.  What is your favorite memory of our friend John Bond?

My favorite memories of John are the daily things he did - seeing him interact with everyone. He was always full of joy and genuinly happy to see you. I think even if you didn't know him by name, if you saw a picture, you would know that he had at some point went out of his way to meet and welcome you. He was such a strong and happy presence in our church family and we are really going to miss that!

John closely guarded his tradition of wearing a tie on the first Sunday of every mnth. He persuaded many to join him. Though I teased him about it and never joined in, he continued to cheerfully encourage the tradition and said he would get me to join in one day. If we remember, Pearl Harbor day - Dec 7 would be a good day to honor John by wearing a tie, that is, if we can find one.

John was very consistent at sharing a wonderful smile and always full of encouragment. John, would share that smile with Frances and generally say something smart about me. He also made a connection with the young, our grandson Trevor loved John as he took up time with Trevor. I think of the verse in 1st John where God's word says, "God is love." John lived that verse out! Thank you Jesus for allowing John and my family to cross paths this side of Heaven!

We just came across this blog today..wish we had seen this earlier. Oh my gosh, John was a sweetheart!! ..He was full of life and fun.., full of jokes for everyone. He always gave our granddaughter, Makinlee a big hug as she passed him on the way to her preschool class. John had a special love for our church...and was consistent with that love everywhere we went (and we've been around town)..He loved the teenagers, he loved singles, little babies, he loved young couples with new children . He was able to relate to so many church families. He had that sparkle in his eyes with the love of Jesus and he was infectious.! You couldn't be in a bad mood around John. He would just make you laugh. We have so many memories of class parties and dinners, games and craziness. He always kept up jumping. We do know that his unconditional love for his precious Lila was a witness to all couples, young and old and many of us hold them up as an example of what a Christian marriage is all about. We will miss John so very much but his spirit definitely still lives with us at Faithbridge. Bobby is trying to keep the "first Sunday tie" traditional going and will continue to in honor of our sweet John.
