Our next President

Whether you are thrilled or are depairing, Barack Obama is President-elect of the United States.

He stands to make history as the first person of African American heritage to assume the responsibilities of President and Commander in Chief of the most powerful country in the world.   As I watched his acceptance speech Tuesday night, I found his sobriety appropriate considering the responsibility he is about to receive.  He stands to be sworn in as the leader of the free world and guardian of democracy in the midst of a moral and spiritual revolution in America, a war against terrorism that spans the globe and an financial crisis unlike anything this new global economy has ever experienced.

I did not vote for Obama ... his lack of experience, skillful political maneuvering, suspicious associations, trillion dollar campaign promises, support of abortion rights and of legislation that will redefine marriage in America were a few of my reasons ... but those are no longer of importance. Because, come January 20, 2009, he will be MY PRESIDENT.

The campaign is over, the election process complete ... and the people have spoken.  So, I accept Mr.Obama as my president.  Romans 13 makes the responsibility of every Christ-follower clear ... everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

As God's people, we now have a responsibility to pray for, support, and submit to - as conscience allows - Mr. Obama.

1 Timothy 2 says, I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Join me in praying for Mr. Obama ....................................

Pray that he will fully appreciate the weighty responsibility of this office.

Pray, now that he has been elected to the highest office in the land, that he no longer function as a politician and will now lead our nation to be concerned about what is right and just.

Pray that God will provide godly counselors and that Obama will esteem their counsel.

Pray that God will silence the mouths of those whose counsel is against God's purposes and plans.

Pray that God will confront him with the brutality and tragedy of abortion in America and either completely change his position on the issue or at least use him to decrease abortions in our country.

Pray that God will accomplish His eternal purposes through Mr. Obama and that through his leadership more and more Americans will place their faith in Jesus Christ and that ours will continue to be a country that sends out a gospel witness around the world.

It appears that Barack Obama will soon be our president and the lives and well being of many many people rests upon his shoulders.  Please join me in praying that God would work in and through this man.

Pastor Paul, I am praying that God give me a heart that is not hardened towards our President-elect. I used your prayer guide several times on November 4th and it really hit home how we have to submit to our President's authority (as long as it does not go against the Word of God). I have felt all along (and believe) that God is in control and His choice would win. I do not second guess the Lord, but pray that he will be with us, no matter what happens. I found Psalm 12:1-8 very comforting, from your prayer sheet. Is it possible to accept someone as our President and still be saddened by it? I am so conflicted. I want to do what is right in God's sight.

To say that I was deeply disappointed on Tuesday is an understatement. You see I deeply love this country and will stand against any who try to bring it down. The spirit of America is broken today and now "Big Government" will be bringing relief to some at the expense of many others. In my life I have always appreciated things that I earned through hard work rather than just given to me. This will all change now as we move towards a society where hard work will be rewarded with the hand of government taking your money and giving it to someone else who didn't work for it. This will only persuade people not to work as hard because they know more will taken from them. I cast my ballot for Mr. McCain but many more voted for Mr. Obama and he was elected by the people. I continue to serve my country and as of Jan 20, 2009 Barrack Obama will be my Commander-in-Chief. In the military our oath of enlistment states: I do solemnly swear to support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice so help me God." I will support the president but it doesn't mean I have to agree. My old Chief used to tell me "you don't have to like it, you just have to do it". I will pray everyday for Mr. Obama to have the wisdom, strength, and courage to lead us in the right direction as a nation under god. If not then the people will speak with the power of the ballot box, and that's the beauty of democracy. God Bless the United States of America.

Absolutely the best reaction and response to the election I have read. I admire the references you cite and the refreshing call for prayer and a mature reaction to the president-elect. Appreciate all you do, bro. T

Not since the days and weeks following Sept 11 have I felt so lost and worried about our country. I continue to pray for God to lead us to safety and keep us strong to face the future with Mr. Obama and all he represents. My solice continues to be that God really is in control and He will continue to bless us.
